George Washington by D'aulaire: pg 56, the last picture of happy slaves standing at the front of the house with Washington's wife and children to welcome him home, is one that some families may want to discuss, or tape over.
However, its depiction of George Washington as a farmer is inadequate on its own to be the only word about the country's first great leader. Although Keating's role in this particular episode is very much back seat, the moments we did spend with him I was drawn instinctively to him as a character.
With his chapters told in first person, you get a feel for who Keating really is, a blend of honour, humility and perhaps a touch more honesty than his advisors would like him to display. I liked him. I was happy to spend time in his company. Which is just as well the scene is well and truly set for one hell of a bumpy ride so liking the protagonist is definitely key.
I do like the way in which the characters have been developed in the book. Although a lot of our focus is on Keating, and his point of view or perspective on those around him, there is enough time spent in the company of other key characters to determine who we like - definitely pro SS Operative David Stahl, and Keating's wife Samantha and daughter Mel, without question not in favour of Keating's successor or her closest advisor.
Mel was a great character and I think that she was portrayed with just the right amount of intelligence, bravery but also vulnerability to make her an authentic character. It would have been easy to make her too capable, to assured, especially given her circumstances through most of the book, but. Determined, defiant, but still scared. And I loved how Samantha maintained her integrity but. The balance between the action and the emotion worked well for me, the authors drawing us right into the heart of the military and rescue operations with a plethora of technical detail which I'm sure is part fact, part fiction - they're not going to give away all of the US security secrets after all.
But it was enough to keep the interest there without overwhelming with detail, slowing the pace and therefore the tension.
It flowed well, the pacing only dropping when the more emotional scenes play out, but lulling you into relaxing just a fraction too much before the stakes, and the speed, pick up once more. I'll admit that the first third of the book is perhaps a little slower, while the story is established, but once you get into the heart of the novel, I really found myself tearing through it, fully focused and driven by the action on the page.
I have the fitness tracker data to prove the impact it had on me. If you like a top notch, political based action thrillers, then this is definitely one I'd recommend. Yes - some of the story may push the boundaries of what may be believable, but then that's the fun of a great novel. It carries you off and takes you to a place where you just don't care.
I cared about the characters, I was completely engrossed in the story and I loved the action and the pace. After studying to American history and politics to degree level, I never really saw myself reading another book written about or by a US President. Just goes to show you - never say never. Loved it. Michael Keating was vice president when the president, Martin Lovering, died of an aortic aneurysm while on a fishing trip. This allowed Keating to accede to the Oval Office and become president.
Unfortunately, he survives despite the bombs and bullets directed his way, but his wife and 3 daughters are killed. So, of course, the cycle of revenge starts all over again. She had been hiking on the Huntsman Trail, which heads towards Mount Rollins, in New Hampshire and the trooper who attended the scene found her ID in a knapsack next to the body of a young man who had been shot to death. Al-Asheed requests three conditions to be met to ensure her safe return: the release of 3 inmates being held in the super-max prison in Florence, Colorado.
Officer Corinne Bradford of NH Police is the one to locate where Asim is staying and soon a huge effort is mounted to try and capture him and reunite Mel with her family. This is a compulsive, engrossing and thoroughly entertaining thriller packed with non-stop action, wild twists and turns and more intense and nail-biting drama than you can shake a stick at.
It's propulsive and riveting from the very first page as the co-authors drop you right into the middle of the excitement. You need to be able to suspend your disbelief to some extent as some of the plot is a little too serendipitous, but most people know that about Patterson's books, however, Clinton does add some authenticity to it all regarding terrorist and army operations, which I thoroughly appreciated.
It's a fun and absorbing read, and I love that these thrillers can be enjoyed by anyone as they provide all the necessary thrills but aren't demanding in terms of brainpower.
View 1 comment. Jun 24, Dr. Embarrassing is probably the best word. Trite, superficial, silly. Big macho super hero above the law believes the end justifies the means as long as his will be done. I hate that a former president promotes such a world view.
In addit Embarrassing is probably the best word. In addition to hating the plot, the flat characters and the theme, I found the writing itself about at the 10 year old level..
This book is just plain atrocious. View all 4 comments. I don't rate books 5 stars very often. THis one was a great read and a fun one. Lots of action and suspense. The book fulfilled its mission. Several narrators for the several POVs made for a great audio! The short chapters actually helped me finish this tomb in like a day or so. I enjoyed reading Mel as a character and her POV to the book in parts here and there.
Mel grows as a president's strong daughter who is very tactful as well as smart in her own way. The way she rescues herself from Asim's men as truly a joy to read about.
The politics with President Pamela, the suspense as well as the tech part was great. The first book is not related at all so definitely pick this up even if you haven't read the first. The book feels like a James Bond movie to me to be very honest, so in terms of exciting new plot this isn't your pick, but the execution was great. Jul 29, Scott rated it it was amazing.
I read most of his books and have for several years. In this outing Patterson has teamed up for a second time with former president, Bill Clinton, to write a novel about none other than a President facing the ultimate terrorist attack on own his own family.
Matt is trying to spend his post-presidency transition time at his retreat, a house on Lake Marie, New Hampshire, while his wife goes back to work and his daughter prepares for college.
Matt has defended his country, both as a soldier and a political leader making tough choices, and now one of those decisions comes back to haunt him in the worst way possible. A Libyan terrorist has waited patiently for years to seek revenge on Matt for the death of his wife and three daughters. Al-Asheed has assumed that Matt can be broken. Enough has been said. Now I am going to give a review on a Patterson novel like I have never done before.
I loved this book. I really enjoyed the Sam hell out of it. I am not sure that I can say that about most of them, and none of them to this level. This is hands down my favorite Patterson novel.
I am not sure what others will think, but for me personally, I think this is his best novel, and here are the reasons why. This is a thriller. An excellent one that is very well plotted, perfect pacing, and just the perfect interjection of twists and turns throughout a high-powered and emotional thrill ride. It is rare that Patterson can actually pull on my heartstrings, but he did with this one. Even when I figured out one of the big surprises in advance, it never took away from the tension and drama I felt while reading it.
The structure of the story is laid out so well and the writing smooth, fast-paced, and intense. This time the onion was peeled in many layers that connected key characters, struggles, and climactic moments. There were multiple plotlines and arcs, and keeping each one going at the same time was no easy achievement, but Patterson delivered. The characters were real and authentic.
They had strengths, weaknesses, and more importantly, flaws like real people. For me, they just came across as real people that I was interested in and drawn to. For me personally, I have often read many Patterson novels that start off well in the first hundred pages or so, with strong villains that seem impossible to catch or mysteries that are challenging to solve.
However, most of them peter out in the last half and either end with a weak showdown or some silly turn of events that causes the bad guy to get caught. That is not the case with this novel.
For me, it not only maintained its momentum, it increased it throughout the entire book. I never once lost interest. It kept my focus and attention from the first to the very last page. The climactic ending lived up to the build-up of the tension, conflict, and storylines.
I personally felt like he was directly involved with the outlining, writing, and editing of the book. And to be honest, I am rather impressed with the outcome of his participation. It is now my favorite that I have read of his. It may or may not be one of your favorites of his books.
But for me, it is. It was that good. Download 1, free audio books, mostly classics, to your MP3 player or computer. Finding books Z-Library. Browse, search, and discover.
