The Mirkwood Campaign is a complete campaign framework for Adventures in Middle-earth, set in and around Mirkwood, played out over the course of three decades. It allows you to tell your own epic saga, following your heroes in their quest as the tale of years unfolds before them. This guide includes enough adventure material to keep you playing for months or even years, and includes new rules that give your heroes a real stake in what happens to the world around them.
Rules for Holdings allow them to carve out their own corner of Middle-earth, whilst new options for the Fellowship Phase and new Undertakings allow them to chart their own path through the years. Additional optional rules allow your Player-heroes to weave their backgrounds into Journey Events. I mainly read this book to see how an Adventures in Middle Earth 5e campaign looks like, as well as to get some encounter and adventure ideas for my own game campaigns which I find books like these are great for.
Without giving away any spoilers, I did like how the campaign progresses through a thirty-year time span where the results of actions the PCs took during certain events effected future events. This campaign set-up could easily be adapted to any homebrew or established game world wit I mainly read this book to see how an Adventures in Middle Earth 5e campaign looks like, as well as to get some encounter and adventure ideas for my own game campaigns which I find books like these are great for.
Another thing that I enjoyed about this book was that you get rules for some of the Nazgul, some of the unique giant spiders and a host of other adversaries that could be used in any 5e game. Bad experience with TOR. I had briefly played some The One Ring but had come away disappointed with its system….
Our pcs spent most of the time wallowing in sadness….. Admitedly this bad experience may have been more down to the fact that all there was at the time was the core rulebook 1e …. Cinematic and varied combat. Pathfinder is too like an accountancy exercise by 9 th level and needs too much prep. But I think it does enough to have options, whilst not overwhelming the GM.
I was also aware there were few critters for TOR whereas for 5e there are plenty — though any porting of critters from 5e to Middle Earth would have to be done with caution. But I am aware that when it comes to combat, it is good to have some variety in combat. Familiar with 5e. I am also familiar with 5e. I have played the 5e Starter Boxed set, and run a couple of games of 5e myself…… It is a relatively simple system at its core and it is well supported.
I was also keen to run it again, and see how it handles 10 th level and beyond. Here are some core ingredients I gathered before starting:. The Bride was the only one chosen. Initiative Tracker. Next week - I will review pitfalls and my musings on how to solve them in the Mirkwood Campaign. No campaign is perfect - and eac h Loremaster LM has to tailor a game to suit their needs.
The Mirkwood Campaign is an awesome campaign - but to make it a successful one, the LM will have to put some work into making it so first.
